Sue and David Radford look forward to welcoming you soon to our Guesthouse in Plymouth |
Breakfast at the Lodge
No matter whether you are keen walkers as we are, or a commercial guest with a hard day's work ahead, or here to 'do' the shops and tourist attractions, or for some other reason, you need a good breakfast to start the day.
But "good" means different things to different people, so you will find a choice of satisfying ways to start your day at Rainbow Lodge.
Every morning, you can choose between the following menu options (other requirements will be met wherever possible):
Local English: Your choice of bacon, egg (fried, scrambled, poached, boiled), sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans featuring local produce wherever possible cooked to order in healthy sunflower oil
French connection: The classic continental breakfast of croissants, fruits and fresh coffee
Detox special: All the fruits, nuts and other things you need for a healthy and energy building morning meal
Before tucking into these, enjoy a choice of cereals or fruit starters and wash your meal down with a cafetière of real coffee or your choice of tea.

So how did 'bed' and 'breakfast' get joined up to make "bed and breakfast"?
Sue Radford says that it all started in the mid 19th century when a mobile workforce travelled around looking for jobs. These workers stayed in 'digs' and what they paid included breakfast. These digs were often in people's homes in commercial and industrial centres and these became the first 'bed and breakfasts'.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the British love affair with the seaside grew rapidly and each Summer millions of holidaymakers headed for places like Blackpool, Scarborough and Torquay. A 'full English' from the landlady's kitchen was the holidaymaker's way of filling up for the whole day before a fish and chip supper.
It therefore became obvious to call these places 'bed and breakfasts', or B&B's for short. They ruled the holiday accommodation sector until the 1950's when foreign package holidays became popular.
