Enjoying the city on your doorstep

Introduction

Plymouth is a historic, maritime city now offering the best in entertainment, nightlife and shopping with of course the added and ever present tang of the sea.
And the best of Plymouth is on your doorstep when you stay at Rainbow Lodge – these words and pictures will give you a taste of what’s just down the road from here.

Breathing in history at Plymouth Hoe

If you fancy the fresh air, try taking a walk where Drake famously finished playing Bowls before turning his attention to the Armada. This is Plymouth’s Hoe Park. From here you can take in one of the world’s truly historic expanses of water, Plymouth Sound.
And Drake is not the only maritime figure involved. This is where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America, where Cook left on his journey to find Australia, and where Darwin hoisted anchor for the Galapagos.

Take in the sea and feel the history washing over you!

  City Centre Shopping

Plymouth has always offered plenty to satisfy the serious shopper. But now it has a huge new hub called Drake Circus to add to the 500 shops already trading in the city’s pedestrianised centre.
Near to the city centre, shops in the Barbican specialise in antiques, with Southside and New Streets being particularly well known for items like jewellery, clocks, nautical items, old silver, toys, china, paintings and porcelain.

Evenings out

If a superb dinner is your evening treat, head for the Barbican where there is a huge choice of restaurants and pubs. Many say that Tanners is the best restaurant of all and it’s within easy walking distance of Rainbow Lodge.
If it’s dinner and a show, the Theatre Royal and the Pavilions are considered two of the country's best entertainment venues.

The University of Plymouth

In The Guardian 2007 league tables, Plymouth emerged as the top modern university. It is an impressive and progressive institution, and is a very short distance from Rainbow Lodge.
